Guardian Ad Litem Program to Host Free Volunteer Training

Those who are interested in becoming a volunteer Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in Colleton County can take advantage of the free virtual training that will be provided by the Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program, which is a branch of the South Carolina Department of Children’s Advocacy.

The training will begin on July 25, 2023. The Department of Social Services (DSS) assigns volunteer attorneys known as GALs to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children who are parties to legal actions in family court.

Volunteers are required to meet certain requirements, including a minimum age of 21, a history free of any criminal convictions or DSS involvement in the past, the availability of free time, and a strong desire to assist a local child in need.

The Colleton County GAL Program is currently assisting 74 children; however, there are no volunteer GALs available to provide assistance. While members of the GAL team fill in the blanks, there is an immediate demand for additional volunteers.

Volunteer advocates are required in our state at a rate that has never been seen before. We want to make sure that every kid who goes through the family court system is given a voice and that they are able to find a safe, permanent home as fast as possible.

According to LaDara Depugh, who oversees the Guardian ad litem (GAL) program in South Carolina, the organization is always looking for compassionate and committed individuals to advocate on behalf of the most vulnerable children in the state.
