Red Foxes one step closer to state championship
The Hartsville Red Foxes found themselves one step closer to the state 4A championship with their win against the Crestwood Knights on Friday night. Both teams claimed their victory at the Kelleytown stadium and were determined that not even the wet field or the foggy atmosphere would keep them from winning.
Hartsville began with a kick off to Crestwood. The Red Foxes scored on their first possession with a 46-yard touchdown pass from QB #15 Tiyon Evans to #1 JD Pendergrass. Placekicker Caleb Caldwell’s extra point was true to put the Red Foxes up 7-0 with 9:12 to go in the first quarter. The Knights returned with a 39-yard touchdown pass. Tiyon Evans returned the kickoff for an 82-yard touchdown to put the Red Foxes back in front. Caldwell’s extra point put Hartsville up 14-7. Evans ran two more touchdowns in the first quarter for 40 and 50 yards bring the score to Foxes 21, Knights 7.
DL #13 Curtis Thompson rushed in just before the end of the first quarter with a 50-yard touchdown for the Foxes. The score was now Foxes 28, Knights 7.
Evans struck again in the second quarter, this time for a 62-yard touchdown run with 9:48 to go before the half. Caldwell was good on the PAT and now Hartsville had a commanding 35-7 lead.
On Hartsville’s next possession, JD Pendergrass broke a 57-yard run to the Crestwood 1 yard line, and senior running back Collins Bishop took it from there. JD Pendergrass bobbled the snap on the extra point, but picked it up and ran it in for a 2-point conversion to put Hartsville up 43-7 with 6:57 to go before the half.
Junior defensive back #8 Zay Peterson picked off the Knights to set Hartsville up at Crestwood’s 29-yard-line. Hartsville did nothing with it and was forced to punt. The Red Foxes were redeemed on their next possession with a 57-yard run from Evans, which set up a 6 yard touchdown run for RB #5 Dariyan Pendergrass. Caldwell’s extra point put the Red Foxes up 50-7 with 17 seconds to go before the half.
In the third quarter, a running clock was implemented, and both teams turned the ball over on downs.
In the fourth quarter, Hartsville scored again with a 7 yard touchdown run from RB #32 Darian McMillan. Kicker Mike Norris’s extra point was good to put Hartsville up 57-7.
