Columbia City brings its award-winning Nutcracker to Hartsville
William Starrett and Columbia City Ballet have brought holiday magic to Hartsville this December with their 60th-anniversary professional, socially-distant production of Nutcracker! Executive and Artistic Director William Starrett created a captivating performance perfect for this unique holiday season. Starrett added a twist to this year’s performance by setting the classical ballet, Nutcracker, in the early years of the 20th century coinciding with the Spanish Flu Pandemic.
“Often we don't consider how devastating the influenza pandemic was in 1918. Over 600,000 Americans died because of that disease and many more were likely saved because people adopted simple public health measures like mask wearing and social distancing,” Artistic and Executive Director William Starrett said. “These lessons aren’t new but with simple costume adjustments we can tell our story, remember the moment we’re in, and keep our dancers safe.
Columbia City Ballet, South Carolina's largest performing arts organization, turned Nutcracker into a local holiday tradition - performing the production for the past 35 years in a row. To keep the tradition alive, strict COVID-19 health and safety protocols are in place to protect our patrons, dancers, staff, and volunteers. Limited ticketing, socially distant seating, and face masks will be required for all audience members for the duration of the production.
Columbia City Ballet’s 60th-anniversary production of Nutcracker will be presented with two performances on December 17th at 7 p.m. and on December 18th at 7 p.m. at the Center Theater. Both performances will adhere to strict Covid-19 safety guidelines, with social distancing and limited seating. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Center Theater’s box office at (803) 332-5721.
