Christmas in April 2016

The holidays are over and we have wonderful memories of family and friends gathering at each other’s homes. You know that place where you feel warm, content, comfortable and safe. We take those feelings for granted. However, so many of our fellow residents; your friends, neighbors and maybe even a family member, lack that luxury. They’re cold and wet due to broken windows, holes in their floors, leaking roofs and living in a home with no insulation. They don’t feel safe due to broken doors or doors with no locks.

Some are in wheelchairs and are confined to their homes because they have no ramp accessibility. These are just some of the repairs that are greatly needed. Christmas In April and its volunteer are their only hope to getting the help they need. This is why Christmas in April has been such a strong tradition in Hartsville for the past 26 years. We are urging everyone in our community - with a special appeal to the area churches, clubs, organizations and businesses - to seriously consider becoming annual participants in a very worthwhile community project.

For the past 26 years, approximately 325 volunteers of men, women and children come together each year to work on repairing approximately 35 designated Hartsville area homes. The homeowners who apply for assistance are hoping and praying to receive much-needed home repairs and wheelchair ramps they cannot afford due to a disability or limited income. Christmas in April is an all-volunteer organization.

The materials and the labor provided to do the repairs are free to the homeowner. Everything is through donations. Not only is there a need for money to purchase supplies, there is a greater need for volunteers to organize a team to select and repair a home. Even if you’re carpentry impaired, we still need you! The Christmas in April committee can only maintain the tradition of serving the needs of the Hartsville community in proportion to the support received.

Please join others in Hartsville in making a contribution to the 2016 Christmas in April project. The Christmas in April work day for this year is Saturday, April 30th. If you are interested in organizing a team or working on a team to repair someone’s home, please call James Samuel at (843) 861-8996 and he’ll gladly assist you. For those who would like to contribute funds for materials for the repairs, please make your checks payable to Hartsville Christmas in April and send it to PO Box 2912, Hartsville, SC 29551.

And as always, your contribution is tax deductible. As a note, over 98% of the funds raised are used directly to repair our city’s homes. Applications for homeowners requesting assistance may be picked up at the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce or the Heritage Community Bank starting Friday, January 15th and returned to the Chamber of Commerce no later than Monday, February 29th or mailed to: Christmas In April, PO Box 2912, Hartsville, SC 29551.
